About Cancun
Cancun is situated on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean coast. It is an area of pristine beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
Due to the area’s natural beauty, in the early 1970s the Mexican Government began a project to develop Cancun into a major holiday destination. At the beginning of the project, Cancun was a village of 100 inhabitants. Today it is a world famous tourist resort with a population of over half a million people. Every year more than 4 million visitors from around the world, holiday in Cancun. There are now around 150 hotels with about 25,000 rooms and nearly 400 restaurants.
Cancun can be divided into two main areas - Cancun city and Cancun island.
Cancun city (downtown), on the mainland, is a typical Mexican town where you will find lots of shops, restaurants and hotels to suit every budget.
Cancun Island is the Hotel Zone where you will find a wide range of the best Cancun hotels and resorts. Accommodation ranges from moderately-priced motel-type properties on the older part of the island (close to the mainland), through to the newer luxury resort hotels. There are also shopping malls, restaurants, clubs, bars and theme parks. The island is virtually a long sand-bar in the shape of the number seven and is connected to the mainland by two bridges – one at the north and one at the south end, with Kukulcan Boulevard running the length of the island. On one side of the island is the Caribbean Sea and the other is Nichupte, a large lagoon separating the island from the mainland.
In the last few years several luxury residential developments have been built in Cancun at a cost of around one hundred million dollars. Among these luxury resorts are Lagos del Sol, Bay View Grand, Isla Dorada, Villamagna and Puerto Cancun. These resorts are excellent investments for international buyers and many properties have been purchased by people from America, Asia, Europe and Mexico. Some of these properties are also available as vacation accommodation.

Cancun is a good base to explore the many natural and historic sites of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Cancun is the gateway to the Riviera Maya, the area south of Cancun that stretches along the Caribbean coast. Riviera Maya is famous for its luxury resorts and hotels, and fine beaches. It is a good base from which to visit Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum. There is excellent diving off the coast of Riviera Maya and many attractions including The Belize Barrier Reef, Xcaret and the pretty town of Playa del Carmen - a town where you will find many luxurious hotels and resorts.
