The sacred Mayan Journey

Only he who carries on his lips the power of prayer; only he who keeps the gratitude of an offering in his lap; only he who considers the physical effort to be a form of sacrifice, know the profound meaning of taking part of a pilgrimage like the Sacred Mayan Journey.

Today, more than 300 oarsmen make the contemporary history of the Sacred Journey, showing the world what discipline, attitude, faith and teamwork accomplish; it’s the role model of the ancient Maya, who went on pilgrimage – for ten centuries- to consult the goddess Ixchel oracle, on the island of Cozumel.

The project of the Sacred Mayan Journey was founded more than three years ago. Recovered from the written glyphs, narrated by the Chroniclers of the Indies and interpreted by the Maya culture specialists, today, Ixchel’s depiction helps us understand the intimate connection between the natural forces and the human nature.

Program

The ancient Maya greatly venerated Ixchel, goddess of the Moon, the tides and fertility. Every year they would go on a pilgrimage to visit her at her principle sanctuary on the island of Cozumel. The main departure point was Polé (today’s Xcaret), whence they would cross the channel in wooden canoes.

With the arrival of the Spanish and as time went on, this practice disappeared, and today, after 500 years, is recreated by Xcaret, bringing back – with accurate historical adherence- clothing, rituals, dances, music, offerings and canoes of the ancient Maya.

The Maya

For over a thousand years, a cultural connection between past and present prevails in the Mayan society memory; nowadays, such essence, praising the culture and value of life, makes history through the Sacred Mayan Journey.

The name Polé comes from the Yucatecan Mayan word P’ole, derived from the root p’ol, meaning “merchandise” and “merchant’s deal”.

Cuzamil

This was the hub for the post-Classic trade route, where merchants and pilgrims arrived from all over the peninsula to render homage to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the Moon. Cozumel was one of the great pilgrimage sites, along with Tulum and Cobá.

Xamanhá

Embarkation port for the Mayan pilgrimages for more than 1,000 years that in Maya means “water of the North”. Once the Maya declined, it became the first settlement of the early 20th century, as a fishermen and farmers community

Cancun Celebrity Golf Invitational 2009

Great International Celebrities play golf in Mexico

MÉXICO CITY, October 16th, 2009- Today, during a press conference, it was announced that, for the first time in Mexico, the Celebrity Golf Invitational 2009 is taking place. The meeting was held at the Geneve Hotel, in the country’s capital.

This event, from December 3th until the 6th, will include several activities, among which two golf tournaments will take place in Cancun, Quintana Roo “Our main objective is to expose, to the eyes of the world, Cancun and its surroundings as one of the most important destinations in Mexico”, said Gustavo Stieglitz, the Celebrity Golf Invitational’s Director.

For Erika Mitzunaga, from Cancun Travel, “the jobs that are created by tourism, plus the existent infrastructure, as well as its marvellous hotels, beautiful beaches and excellent golf courses make from Cancun a key player in Mexico’s development”, said Mitzunaga.

Stieglitz also commented that “these kind of high end events contribute, undoubtedly, to worldwide promote Cancun and the Mayan Riviera. Visit Mexico supports these projects because they always end in a win-win situation”.

The main attractive in this del Celebrity Golf Invitational 2009 edition is the presence of great American show business and sports stars, known for their love for the game and for their altruistic activities. “We have played several times this kind of events in the United States”, said Reggie Whitehead, CEO from Top Niche Productions, responsible for bringing these great celebrities to Mexico. “Thanks to our Mexican friends we decided to bring them, for the first time in Mexico, which is worldwide known for its hospitality and an excellent image, golf wise speaking”, finished Whitehead.

Besides the social activities surrounding the event, two golf tournaments will take place. Both will be played at the Playa Mujeres Golf Club, designed by the famous Australian player and architect, Greg Norman.

One of the tournaments will be a Skins game, played only by the show business and Sports celebrities that have accepted the invitation. The other one will be a Pro Am, with each one of the celebrities as the head of a three amateur-group.

At the same time, The Organizing Committee has decided to host a poker tournament, Texas Hold ‘em style, among the stars. Profits from this event have been destined to three charities. “We cannot conceive such a gathering without sharing a concrete benefit with the needed”, said Stieglitz. “Golf has been an activity that always gives back. This time it couldn’t be different, because we are having these great stars together, to generate a direct social benefit”.

The poker tournament and the special memorabilia silent auction will be held at the official hotel, the Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort & Spa, a Deluxe All Inclusive resort located in the Riviera Maya. “We put our hotel as the event official venue because the idea is an excellent one”, said Erika Garcia, President from Yucatan Holidays. “We will put everything in our hands so the celebrities and players that attend the event feel at home and will live one of their best experiences in their lives”, said Garcia, who was also the Hacienda Tres Rios rep.

A base of jazz with a touch of funk and different styles of rock create the sound of Aguamala. They have their own unique style with great music and great quality. The band was founded in the beginning of 2004 in the heart of Playa del Carmen, the enchanted town where all of the band’s members have lived for a long time. The band is comprised of Fernando Toussaint on drums, Enrique Pat on the keyboards, Bernardo Ron on the guitar and Luis Ernesto Lopez in the bass. These artists have performed with artists such as Arath Lanz, Diego Maroto, Agustin Bernal, Enrique Nery, Pancho Lelo de la Rea, Alejandro Campos, Rey David Alexander, Leonardo Sandoval, Eugenio, Enrique and Cecilia Toussaint, Pepe Hernandez, PP Moran y Cristobal Lopez.

Colin also pursues his passion for music. A huge fan of the 1950′s crooner-jazz era, when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett filled the airways, Colin Hunter fulfilled a long standing dream of becoming a singer in 2005 when he launched his first CD called Come Fly With Me, which was recorded with the 16 piece band, the Starlight Orchestra. This release coincided with the inaugural flights of Sunwing Airlines.

In 2007 he returned with a second album, Timeless, then his third CD was made in tandem with renowned jazz pianist Joe Sealy titled “Mostly About You”, which was released in December 2008. His fourth CD, “Timeless Too”, will be in the stores soon.

Colin has hit the stage many times in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec and also in the Dominican Republic. Recognized for his smooth voice and sophisticated, upbeat performances, Colin Hunter loves getting on stage to entertain the crowd.

Since 2004 Rosa Elena Valdez and Jean Agarrista have worked together putting together different sounds and styles of music, working hand in hand with Fernando Rojas and playing regularly at the Royal Hideaway Hotel, where they got the inspiration to form a band and name it “The Royal Band”. Finding their roots in Latin jazz and then incorporating the sax as the main element, they made their own style, mainly defined as “smooth jazz” influenced by jazz of the 80′s.

In 2008 while preparing to record their first album, The Royal Band incorporated other woodwind and brass instruments such as, tenor sax, trombone and trumpet.

The mix of different cultures and nationalities among all the band members makes a unique Latin sound
