Under the title, “Cancun and the Treasures of the Caribbean,” the Cancun CVB  is launching its integral 2010 marketing campaign whose main theme incorporates surrounding islands and destinations. The marketing strategy’s purpose is aimed at positioning Cancun as a grand, diverse destination that integrates a variety of options such as fashion, adventure, ecological tours, gastronomy and much more.

In this re-launch, Cancun is accompanied by nearby islands such as Holbox, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Contoy and the seaside fishing village of Puerto

Morelos. Now, they’ll come together under one umbrella, Cancun: one of the country’s most significant tourism destinations. Each one of these

distinctive destinations is considered a treasure not just for its beauty, but also for its unique personality.

A seductive combination of natural beauty and charm, Holbox Island offers its guests contact with the world’s largest fish, the Whale Shark

, along with a wide variety of ecological activities.

Contoy Island houses more than 250  different species of fish and 150 diverse types of birds. Because the island is free of predators, its environment provides the ideal setting for the reproduction of these beautiful birds. Contoy is also home to Boca Iglesia, a community of only 26 inhabitants, only accessible via seaport. Boca Iglesia is recognized by the region as a mystical destination. Its main attraction is an excursion into the islands mangroves, visiting the ruins of an antique church destroyed by English and French pirates.

The island of Cozumel is best known for its scuba diving. Dive enthusiasts can get up close and personal with the Mesoamerican reef, the largest in the

northern hemisphere, and second largest in the world, allowing for extensive marine vegetation and fauna.

With more than 480 years of history, Isla Mujeres is a fishing island that provides a picturesque landscape as its background for the destination’s boutique hotels and Caribbean attractions.

Puerto Morelos is the oldest port in the state of Quintana Roo, and is a great starting point if you want to explore Cenote routes and visit the

Mayan World. The hotels available in this area include distinctive all-inclusive resorts as well as a variety of European Plan hotels.

These treasures encompass a Mexican paradise and make up a wealth of precious destinations for visitors to explore in the Mexican Caribbean.

Only he who carries on his lips the power of prayer; only he who keeps the gratitude of an offering in his lap; only he who considers the physical effort to be a form of sacrifice, know the profound meaning of taking part of a pilgrimage like the Sacred Mayan Journey.

Today, more than 300 oarsmen make the contemporary history of the Sacred Journey, showing the world what discipline, attitude, faith and teamwork accomplish; it’s the role model of the ancient Maya, who went on pilgrimage – for ten centuries- to consult the goddess Ixchel oracle, on the island of Cozumel.

The project of the Sacred Mayan Journey was founded more than three years ago. Recovered from the written glyphs, narrated by the Chroniclers of the Indies and interpreted by the Maya culture specialists, today, Ixchel’s depiction helps us understand the intimate connection between the natural forces and the human nature.

Program

The ancient Maya greatly venerated Ixchel, goddess of the Moon, the tides and fertility. Every year they would go on a pilgrimage to visit her at her principle sanctuary on the island of Cozumel. The main departure point was Polé (today’s Xcaret), whence they would cross the channel in wooden canoes.

With the arrival of the Spanish and as time went on, this practice disappeared, and today, after 500 years, is recreated by Xcaret, bringing back – with accurate historical adherence- clothing, rituals, dances, music, offerings and canoes of the ancient Maya.

The Maya

For over a thousand years, a cultural connection between past and present prevails in the Mayan society memory; nowadays, such essence, praising the culture and value of life, makes history through the Sacred Mayan Journey.

Ppolé

The name Polé comes from the Yucatecan Mayan word P’ole, derived from the root p’ol, meaning “merchandise” and “merchant’s deal”.

Cuzamil

This was the hub for the post-Classic trade route, where merchants and pilgrims arrived from all over the peninsula to render homage to Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of the Moon. Cozumel was one of the great pilgrimage sites, along with Tulum and Cobá.

Xamanhá

Embarkation port for the Mayan pilgrimages for more than 1,000 years that in Maya means “water of the North”. Once the Maya declined, it became the first settlement of the early 20th century, as a fishermen and farmers community

Ppolé

The name Polé comes from the Yucatecan Mayan word P’ole, derived from the root p’ol, meaning “merchandise” and “merchant’s deal”.

“An ancient ritual”

Only he who carries on his lips the power of prayer; only he who keeps the gratitude of an offering in his lap; only he who considers the physical effort to be a form of sacrifice, know the profound meaning of taking part of a pilgrimage like the Sacred Mayan Journey.

In the Mexican Caribbean, and for about ten centuries, the ancient Maya went on pilgrimage to venerate the goddess Ixchel, the white-skinned, the goddess of the Moon cycles, the fertility, the art of weaving and painting, the medicine, the divination, the fishing and the storms.

Around 500 BC the pilgrimages to her oracle in the island of Cuzamil, today’s Cozumel, departed from the most remote cities in the Mayan world. The ports as Xamanhá, today’s Playa del Carmen, and Polé, today’s Xcaret, served as a bridge to cross the deep waters of the Caribbean and venerate Ixchel. By the mid 16th Century, the navigation to the Indies was prohibited by the Spanish crown and the shrine of Ixchel disappeared.

The project of the Sacred Mayan Journey was founded more than three years ago by Xcaret together with Cozumel and Solidaridad municipalities. Recovered from the written glyphs, narrated by the Chroniclers of the Indies and interpreted by the Maya culture specialists, today, Ixchel’s depiction helps us understand the intimate connection between the natural forces and the human nature. About 300 oarsmen made the contemporary history of this sacred journey, showing the world what discipline, attitude, faith and teamwork accomplish. The Sacred Mayan Journey is a shining example for Mexico to follow
