Great International Celebrities play golf in Mexico

MÉXICO CITY, October 16th, 2009- Today, during a press conference, it was announced that, for the first time in Mexico, the Celebrity Golf Invitational 2009 is taking place. The meeting was held at the Geneve Hotel, in the country’s capital.

This event, from December 3th until the 6th, will include several activities, among which two golf tournaments will take place in Cancun, Quintana Roo “Our main objective is to expose, to the eyes of the world, Cancun and its surroundings as one of the most important destinations in Mexico”, said Gustavo Stieglitz, the Celebrity Golf Invitational’s Director.

For Erika Mitzunaga, from Cancun Travel, “the jobs that are created by tourism, plus the existent infrastructure, as well as its marvellous hotels, beautiful beaches and excellent golf courses make from Cancun a key player in Mexico’s development”, said Mitzunaga.

Stieglitz also commented that “these kind of high end events contribute, undoubtedly, to worldwide promote Cancun and the Mayan Riviera. Visit Mexico supports these projects because they always end in a win-win situation”.

The main attractive in this del Celebrity Golf Invitational 2009 edition is the presence of great American show business and sports stars, known for their love for the game and for their altruistic activities. “We have played several times this kind of events in the United States”, said Reggie Whitehead, CEO from Top Niche Productions, responsible for bringing these great celebrities to Mexico. “Thanks to our Mexican friends we decided to bring them, for the first time in Mexico, which is worldwide known for its hospitality and an excellent image, golf wise speaking”, finished Whitehead.

Besides the social activities surrounding the event, two golf tournaments will take place. Both will be played at the Playa Mujeres Golf Club, designed by the famous Australian player and architect, Greg Norman.

One of the tournaments will be a Skins game, played only by the show business and Sports celebrities that have accepted the invitation. The other one will be a Pro Am, with each one of the celebrities as the head of a three amateur-group.

At the same time, The Organizing Committee has decided to host a poker tournament, Texas Hold ‘em style, among the stars. Profits from this event have been destined to three charities. “We cannot conceive such a gathering without sharing a concrete benefit with the needed”, said Stieglitz. “Golf has been an activity that always gives back. This time it couldn’t be different, because we are having these great stars together, to generate a direct social benefit”.

The poker tournament and the special memorabilia silent auction will be held at the official hotel, the Hacienda Tres Ríos Resort & Spa, a Deluxe All Inclusive resort located in the Riviera Maya. “We put our hotel as the event official venue because the idea is an excellent one”, said Erika Garcia, President from Yucatan Holidays. “We will put everything in our hands so the celebrities and players that attend the event feel at home and will live one of their best experiences in their lives”, said Garcia, who was also the Hacienda Tres Rios rep.

Whether you are visiting cancun for a night, or staying for many nights, we are here to ensure you experience Cancun to its fullest.

The City

The City opened its doors for the first time on January 30, 2004, debuting as an important center of entertainment in Cancun. It features fresh and innovative architecture and is capable of hosting more than 5,000 guests at one time. The City consists of five main concepts: a nightclub, a beach club, a lounge, Porterhouse Grill steak house, and a terrace bar. The layout of this Cancun landmark consists of a tri-level, indoor/outdoor state-of-the-art mega dome with nine bars: an open-bar dance level, VIP party level, a VIP private level, and a beach club complete with massive pool, waterslide and wave machine. The nightclub includes a 30-watt laser, a staff of over 200 and a multi-million dollar lighting system. Everything inside the nightclub has been built with personal guest service and non-stop entertainment in mind. The City is equipped with extensive safety features, including 12 emergency exits, 32 security cameras, a security staff of over 40 people and an in-house doctor available every hour of operation.

Coco Bongo

Voted the #1 nightclub in North America by Playboy and MTV, this Cancun club is sure to please everyone. Each night various performers take the stage to please the crowd while acrobats dangle 50 feet above the dance floor performing incredible feats of skill and athleticism. Coco Bongo brings to Cancun the flavours of Cirque du Soleil, Las Vegas, and New Years Eve all rolled into one every single night.  A definite crowd pleaser every time, Coco Bongo is the hotspot of Cancun hotspots.

Bull Dog Cafe

Each and every Saturday night in Cancun, Breakaway Tours takes over the one and only Bulldog Café.  With capacity for over 2,000 people and a large stage for performers, Spring Break revelers with Breakaway Tours in 2008 will go to see such live acts as Mims, Richboy, Young Jeezy, Clinton Sparks and Lil Jon. Bulldog also features 5 bars, a state-of-the-art sound and light show, and a “girls only” VIP Jacuzzi right on the dance floor.

Basic

Basic is one of the hottest nightclubs in Cancun. Contrary to its name, this club is anything but basic – giving the appearance of a floating island with white canvas “walls” which open on its upper side. The result is the creation of the only place in Cancun where you can dance and go wild under the stars and over the lagoon, to the pulsing sounds of a DJ spinning some of the best rock, R&B and pop songs in Cancun. Basic even has its own simulated rain system, which is how and why our Cancun Wet Party here is so aptly named!

Senor Frogs

A restaurant by day and party atmosphere at night, Senor Frog’s Restaurant and Bar in Cancun is one of the most popular spots in all of Cancun. When the sun sets, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to spend the evening with 1,500 of your closest friends. And don’t worry if you haven’t met everyone – you will before the night’s over. With daily live music, DJs, contests and karaoke, this bar is always hopping until the early morning hours. And if that’s not enough, there’s even a water slide from Senor Frog’s out to the lagoon. So bring your bathing suit.

Playa Cabana

Playa Cabana in Cancun features 27 cabanas, each with capacity for 6 and offering exotic, minimalist Caribbean design. Every cabana comes equipped with a complete sound system with individual audio controls. The cabanas also feature refreshing misters to stay cool while you get that perfect suntan. Playa Cabana in Cancun offers two multi-level pools, with space to work on your tan next to a beautiful cascading waterfall. A full bar includes exotic cocktails. Guests can also enjoy fresh and delicious appetizers like sushi, salads, and more. There is even a palapa clubhouse surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea and over 75 swaying palms.

Cozumel History

HISTORY

The first Maya settled in Cozumel 2,000 years ago. However, during the classic period 300-900 A.C.- a time when priests were at the top of the social hierarchy in the Maya world and life revolved around religious ceremonies Cozumel became one of the most important sanctuaries in the Yucatan region. Cozumel derives its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which form the word Cuzamil (land of swallows). The Mayan word changed with time to the Spanish name of Cozumel. The Mayans believed the island to be a sacred shrine.

Cozumel Beach

Religious pilgrimages were common to the island especially from women who were either pregnant or wanted to get pregnant. They pay homage to the goddess Ix Chel, the deity of the moon, pregnancy and childbirth. It was a tradition among the Maya People in general to make the trip at least ossnce in their lifetime to the shrine of this goddess By 1200 D.C, in Middle America there existed an important long distance trade in which Cozumel was a key link.

It was on this island where all kinds of merchandise arrived from far away places. Goods were temporarily stored before being sent in canoes to other distribution points.

It was by 1518 that the Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva arrived to the coast of the island on Holy Cross Day (May 3rd), named this land as “Isla de la Santa Cruz” and proclaimed the land as property of the Doña Johanna and Don Carlos Kings of Spain, The Spanish arrive, to Cozumel on May 06 making a peaceful stop on the island, received by the locals, exchanging gold and a variety of goods.

Juan de Grijalva ordered the chaplain Juan Díaz to offer a mass on the same place that the islanders had a temple therefore on may 6th the first catholic ceremony was held in México, at a location named by the Spanish like Saint

John (currently named Las Casitas (little houses), where every year mass is still celebrated by the locals.
