Cancun Fishing
Cancun is not only known for the beauty of its Caribbean waters, it's also famous for its water sports and sport fishing is one of them.
The best place to organise a fishing charter is at one of the many marinas at the Lagoon in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The charter company will organise your fishing permit and all equipment required.
There are several fishing styles on offer.
The lightest of them is fly fishing, which consists of artificial bait with animal hair or bird feathers. Light graphite rods are used and the bait is cast into shallow waters.
A second style of fishing is light-tackle fishing. The equipment is more resistant than for fly fishing, (for example, polycarbonate rods) and larger bait is used. Reels measure 300 yards and the most suitable place for this type of fishing is the mangroves.

Fly fishing and light tackle fishing are usually used to catch the following species in Cancun: Snapper, Ray, Mero, Escochín, Pez Sierra, Bonito, Bass, Shad.
Fishing also takes place in deeper water and charter operators will anchor the boat to the seabed. Lead is added to the hook so that the line can fall easily to the bottom, and bait is usually a synthetic imitation of small fish. A good place to practice this style is the Isla Mujeres and Isla Blanca bays.
The most spectacular style of sport fishing is fishing in the open sea. Special equipment is used which is made of the strongest, most flexible rods, with yards and yards of line and the fisherman usually sits in a fixed seat. The most suitable place for this type of fishing is beyond Isla Mujeres in front of the Cancun Hotel Zone.
